I never used to be a crier. I mean I did cry. On occasion. Normally when I finally did, I’d cry for hours, because it was 8 months worth of bottled up tears.  That’s just the way I was. Not so much anymore. Now? I cry a lot.

I’m emotional. I’m depressed. My life has crumbled and I’m trying to pick up the pieces. I’m doing okay despite it. However, I cry at everything right now. Yes, I have good reason too cry. Yes, it is helpful. In fact, some days I’m convinced it’s actually making me feel better. But I cry at EVERYTHING right now. It’s kinda my thing. I’m a crier.

I’d really like to find a new thing. My eyes hurt. All the dam time. It’s tiring to cry all day.

So this is where I ask for your help. See, I have this problem….I listen to the same three songs all day long. Yes, I do mean ALL DAY LONG. Ahem. I told you, I have a problem.

I’ll give you a little sample of the songs and lyrics and you’ll be able to tell why I need new songs.

No this ain’t how it was suppose to be, If you’re out chasin’ all your dreams, Tell me where does that leave me….What about the promise that you made, To stay with me till your dying day, Said you’d never go away, Are they just things that people say…Could I have loved a little deeper, Or did I hold on too strong. – Things People Say by Lady Antebellum

I know there are no guarantees, In love you take your chances, But somehow it seems unfair to me, Look at the circumstances,Through sickness and health, ’till death do us part, Those were the words that we said from our heart, So now that you say that you’re leaving me, I don’t get that part….Well I’m not gonna cry, I’m not gonna cry, I’m not gonna shed no tears, No, I’m not gonna cry, it’s not the time. Not gonna cry by Mary J. Blige

(Even funnier is that half of those lyrics are I’m not gonna cry and I still do, every dam time.)

What about now? What about today? What if you’re making me all that I was meant to be? What if our love had never went away? What if it’s lost behind words we could never find? Baby, before it’s too late, What about now?  – What About Now by Daughtry

Yeah, see, hai. Issa NEEDS NEW SONGS. Badly.

Today is National Delurking Day. I understand some of you will still lurk. I love lurkers. My best friend is a lurker. Sadly, right now, I am kind of a lurker as well. But for those of you willing to help me out, I’d really appreciate it. I though maybe if I asked for something specific, it may be a little easier to delurk. It’s a thought at least.

What I need is this:

1. A song that makes you cry, because I’m not done crying yet. I wish I was, but I know I’m not. Not yet. One day. Maybe even soon-ish, but not yet.

2. A song that makes you happy, because I’d like to make a happy song playlist for times when I really need to STOP all the dang crying for a bit.

3. Your current favorite song. Just because I’m curious.

That’s it. If you are willing, I’d love the help. If not? That’s okay too. I still love you for reading here.

I’ll play because the fact that you have a Lady Antebellum song up there means that you aren’t opposed to my country options, which are most of the songs on my playlists.

Song to cry: What I Cannot Change by LeAnn Rimes and about 3/4 of the songs on the radio. I’m a crier.
Song to be happy: Wow. This is way harder than I think it should be. People are Crazy by Billy Currington always makes me smile. But honestly? I just through my entire list of songs on my phone and couldn’t find one that was my happy song. I could find a ton that were sad songs. Must go change that!
Current fav: HUGE fan of Need You Now by Lady Antebellum

@Angela, On no, I love country. Well at least newer country. Lady Antebellum is my current favorite. Not a song of theirs that I don’t love.

Have both of those others. But I had forgotten how much I loved that LeAnn song. Thank you for delurking. :)

In the Ghetto (Elvis) makes me cry every time I hear it. I recently heard Temporary Home (Carrie Underwood) that has the same effect (similar “stories”)!
My fav “happy place” song is So What (P!nk) it’s the best relationship “F$&k You” song EVER!
I hope things start looking up for you. I don’t know what’s going on, but from your songs I can tell you that there is surely someone out there that will forever love you. Good luck, sister!

Song that ALWAYS makes me cry: I Could Not Ask For More – Edwin McCain – it’s “our song” Plus – has extra special meaning since Ava was born.

Song that makes me happy: Do Your Thing – Edwin McCain (You seeing a pattern here? LOL) It’s upbeat, in both tempo and lyric.

Current favorite song: Call Your Name – Daughtry “Complicated situations are the making of all that’s wrong…I’ve been standing in the river of deliverance way too long” that line just resonates with me currently.

Skinny Love-Bon Iver. Keep Holding on-Glee! Sweet Disposition from the (500) Days Of Summer soundtrack. The majority of John Mayer’s new album Battle Studies.

Happy songs/Dance party songs: Ok I am ashamed to admit this, I am LOVING Ke$ha. SO much. Specifically the songs Your Love Is My Drug, Blah Blah Blah, and Take It Off.
    Laughing At You- Head Automatica
Bad Romance & Love Games- Lady Gaga
    Lover- Devendra Banheart

    Touch down Turn around- HelloGoodbye
    FNT- Semisonic

    Current Favs

I would need to be at home with my iTunes to really do this, but since that may not happen until February, here goes just a general list of songs for you…

Billy Currington “Why, Why, Why” (kinda sad, kinda angry)
Eve “You Had Me, You Lost Me,” (this one got frequent play the week before an ex came into town to see me again)
    Dave Matthews/Kenny Chesney “I’m Alive” (it’s my “put-things-in-perspective-and-get-over-yourself-moment” song)
Trace Adkins “Marry for Money” (just a thought…?)
Flo.Rida “Right Round” (Shut up…I like it)
Prince “Purple Rain” (an all-time favorite, don’t judge)
    U2 “Get on Your Boots”

    * Resistance – Muse
    * Fall at Your Feet – Crowded House (don’t know why, it’s an old song, I just rediscovered it when my sister burned one of their CDs for me)

P.S. Other good breakup songs for you:
    * Untouchable Face – Ani DiFranco (when you get to your “angry” phase)
    * Tonight – Elton John (ooooold song, like early 70s, but fantastic)

  • 1. Broken by Lifehouse – it’s my prayer when I’ve felt like I was in pieces. I’m falling apart, barely breathing. With a broken heart that’s still beating…
    2. I Do Not Hook Up – I love the spirit of independence and the fast beat to rock out to.
    3. At the moment, it’s The Motions, by Matthew West – It’s how I’m living each day. I don’t wanna spend my whole life asking, What if I had given everything? Instead of going through the motions…

    1. Sad song. Have to think hard here, I’m not a crier, really. I bang and slam pots and pans instead to let out my emotions, usually. Bell, Book, & Candle, by Eddi Reader; Crying, Roy Orbison & k.d. lang; Please Don’t Leave Me, Pink.

    2. Happy song. Woo Hoo, Kings of Leon. Tubthumping, Chumbawamba. ;)

    3. Current faves: Comme des enfants, Coeur de pirate; Music Again, Adam Lambert (yes, really!); Bad Influence, Pink, and So What, Pink; Just Feel Better, Santana.

My all-time favourite, when I want to dance to happy music & flip the bird to the world at the same time??? Fuck You, by Lily Allen. Actually, her whole album, It’s Not Me It’s You is well worth a listen. Just not in front of little people with big ears. ;) Stay well, Issa.

Really, if you want to cry, Mary J. Blige is totally the way to go!

But here’s what moves me these days:

If I really want a good cry I listen to Jeff Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah.” I think the first time I heard it was in an episode of “West Wing,” but it’s one of those songs that really hits your in the core. Soulful. Moving.

My happy songs are anything my Earth, Wind and Fire. If you can find a live version of “September” you can’t not move and feel happy.

On the new Alicia Keys album (Element of Freedom) there’s a song called “Put It In A Love Song” with Beyonce. It’s just a light, fun song that you can totally bust a move to!

Really, the best song of all time (yes, it’s a big statement, but even Bono said he wished he wrote this song) is “Mother We Just Can’t Get Enough” by the New Radicals. They put out one album and quit, which is too bad. That album also has “You Get What You Give.” Blast both and I swear to god you’ll feel better!

    ***waves*** Hiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeee! :)

There aren’t many songs that make me cry, yes, I’m a crier, but not particularly because of a song. Right after 9/11 The Star Spangled Banner and Proud to be an American always made me cry, and they both still give me goose bumps! My one very sentimental song is Ballerina Girl by Lionel Richie, my dad use to sing it to me when I was little.

My happy songs are most anything on the Glee soundtrack and She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy by Kenny Chesney. I love Kenny so most of his songs make me happy.

My favorite song right now is You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift, it’s been out a while, but I just love it and Love Story too.

Songs that make me cry: Depends on the mood. My Little Girl (Tim McGraw), Screaming Infidelities (Dashboard Confessional), and Nothing Gets Crossed Out (Bright Eyes) are go-to songs when I’m feeling melodramatic and need to know I’m not alone. I heard a song on a country station the other day that I thought was ridiculous and suddenly I was bawling. It started about a guy with his kid in the backseat eating a happy meal. I have daddy issues.

Songs that make me happy: Smile (Lily Allen). Anything fun and bouncy. All DMX songs make me feel invincible and bad ass. I love mid-90s hiphop, mainly bc that’s when I really began enjoying my life. Also love singing Indigo Girls, Dixie Chicks, and Taylor Swift. Just love it.

@Kelly, How funny, because I just downloaded the Fireflies song. Ha. Great suggestions. Thank you. Some I have, but others I don’t. Yet.

  • Ohhhh, you have unleashed the beast. I’m a music addict…my iTunes library could currently play for over a month (we’re talking 24/7) without repeating itself.

That said, I listen to a LOT of indie stuff that no one’s ever heard of, or will hear of in 2 years when they go big. So here is a very abbreviated (from the first list I made) bunch of suggestions. These ought to be mainstream enough that you can get them easily.

    Sad:

Lady Antebellum – Need You Now
Seether and Amy Lee – Broken
    Daughtry – Gone
    Daughtry – Life After You
    Jason Blaine – What I Can’t Forget
Toby Keith – When Love Fades
Amanda Wilkinson – It’s Okay To Cry
    Darin Zanyar – Flashback
    Jordin Sparks – Battlefield
Keith Urban – Tonight I Wanna Cry

    Uplifting:

Shane Yellowbird – Life Is Calling My Name
The Wilkinsons – Back on My Feet
Emerson Drive – I Love This Road
    Kanye West – Stronger
Leahy – The Call to Dance (instrumental)
Linkin Park – Hands Held High
    Martina McBride – Broken Wing
    Paul Brandt – Risk

    Dance:

Bob Sinclaire – Rock This Party
    Cascada – Evacuate the Dancefloor
Daniel Bovie and Roy Rox ft Nelson – Love Me
    Darin Zanyar – Step Up
Jay Sean – Do You Remember

I could go for days. But instead, I shall hug you and hope you like these. I edited out the ones that other people suggested. Like Pink. Damn, she’s good angry music. Oh! Just adding another one. Whaddya Want From Me, Adam Lambert. It was written by Pink (if you listen, you can totally hear her influence) and Max Medina (the man behind, um, every awesome pop hit EVER).

    I’m done now. I swear.
    XOXOXOX

@The Grown Up Teenager, MIne used to be like that, until my mac died this time last year. Now it has about a weeks worth on it. I’d forgotten about The Wilkinsons and Emerson Drive. Thinking that was some that didn’t make the dead mac days. I love a lot of the others…some I have, some I will need to get. A few I’ve never heard of, but will check out now.

ps. Because you are awesome…I will ignore the Toby Keith one. HA. Can’t stand that man. ;) Must resist urge to go in and delete that one line. Ahem. I have issues.

Thank you for all of these. Love it. :)

  • Sad: “No Surprise” by Daughtry, “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Rait. Mm. Yeah. Fun times.

Happy: “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas, “Sweet Sweet Baby” by Michelle Featherstone, cuz it makes me think of mah youngon’s.

Also the soundtrack from the show “Glee” has some good tunes. I have their version of “Somebody to Love” on my workout playlist.

Favorite: I’ll go with Single Ladies, Beyonce. Holla.

    Issa Reply:

@Diapers and Wine, Daughtry and Bonnie Rait rock. Never heard the Michelle song…will listen to it now. And um yeah…am not into Glee. :)

Single ladies used to make me crack up. Now it makes me think about Maddie.

  • Walter says:

Here’s a song where I’ve cried a lot: “If your not the one”
A happy song would be: “Can’t smile without you”

And my current favorite song is: “You belong to me” :-)

  • Hes says:

    Sad: “Halah” by Mazzy Star

    Happy: “Lights Out” – Santogold

    Favorite: “Kids” – MGMT

Hang in there. It will get better.

  • When I want to feel all jaunty, it’s “On To The Next One” by Jay-Z. I have no idea what it’s about, but I like the sentiment: ON TO THE NEXT ONE, BITCHES!

When I want to feel amused and sort of weirdly reassured, I go with “everything’s fine” by darynyck. Give that one a listen if you need a (somewhat rueful) laugh.

@Jen the Trephinist, I never know what Jay-Z is talking about, even when I know all the words. I still like him though.
