1. My house lacks insulation. That is that only think I can think of, that makes it so dam cold in here. My heat is running constantly and it can’t keep up. It hasn’t been above 40 degrees outside in over a week and I’m not sure the last time I saw the sun. It’s been snowing for three days straight. Basically I’m cold. I’m cold all day. I’m cold all night. Last night, I was warm for the first time at night in a few days. Want to know why? Because I let both Bailey and Harrison sleep with me. I am tired of being cold. Every once in awhile, on Extreme Home Makeover, they spray this foam soy stuff into the walls. I wonder if I could hire someone to spray foam in my walls? Probably cheaper than moving right? I know I need new windows too, but that’s a little too expensive to consider right now. Can it just be Spring already?

2. I pretty much said on Twitter the other night, that I’m not going to be able to attend BlogHer this summer. Figure I should say it here too. There is just no way I can go. I had a blast last year, but thinking I can maybe possibly go, just isn’t realistic. It’s better to just say, I’m not going. It’s too expensive and my year is a bit too uncertain. Between paying for therapy, knowing my laptop is on it’s last leg, fixing my car three times in the last two months and oh yes…paying for my divorce, I’m a bit tapped out. Divorce is expensive, yo. Also, I already have a few small trips planned and I’d like to take my kids somewhere this summer. Won’t be someplace pricey, but it will be family time. Family time, trumps NYC in August.

3. In two months, I’m going to be 30 years old. I think I want to come up with 30 things I want to do before I turn 40. The problem is that I have trouble thinking about the future right now. I can’t seem to come up with anything. I don’t know what I want to do, where I’d want to go, or what I’d like to see. So I’m taking suggestions. If you could do one thing, see one thing or go one place right now, what would it be? I’m not going to steal your ideas and make my list, I’m more just curious what you all will say. I’ll wait until my birthday to make my list. By then, I’m hoping I’ll have an easier time seeing beyond today. So, what say you?

#1 & 2 things on my bucket list are visiting Australia and going on an Alaskan Cruise.

    Will miss you in NYC!

@AmazingGreis, Oh I may be going on an Alaskan cruise next spring with my mom and kids.

I get seasick though, so it makes me a bit nervous.

If I had the luxury or time and money right now, I would go on a road trip through Italy and drink and eat everything I encounter, learn how to tango and take up photography seriously.

@Jen, Ditto. On Italy and photography. Oh and eating my way through Italy. Yummmm.

  • Sounds like why I can’t go to blogher. I want to but too much family stuff going on in the summer. EVERY summer. enjoy the family time too!

@Becky @TheRealBecks, I just saw on Twitter that Matt is leaving for five days. Your payback for that should be BH!!!!!

I’m sorry you won’t be able to attend BlogHer, but it sounds like you’re good with your decision, and that’s what counts. I’d look up angie’s list – it’s a compilation of reputable contractors, and I think it’s national. Someone should be able to give you some advice on heating your house!

Hmmm if I could do one thing, it would be to compete in a sprint triathlon. I’m planning on doing it next May, a year after this baby is born. Wish me luck! I wish you luck putting together and completing your list!

  • I am sad to know that you won’t be there, but I totally understand. You could always come to Ohio and visit Put in Bay. I swear you would love it-we should have a girls weekend at the cottage there. Its so peaceful and calm and just awesome….I swear.

    Crap…the internet ate my comment.

Suffice to say, I feel your cold. I hate being cold. Good slippers and lots of tea is about all I can suggest.

I think you’re making a responsible decision about Blogher. Easy for me to say: I blog in secret, so conferences are completely out of the question for me.

My life list includes finishing a marathon and an olympic-distance triathlon, and writing a novel (no need to have it published…just write it).

But what about smaller things? Tasting caviar, volunteering at a soup kitchen, travelling to a place you’ve always thought about, or knitting a pair of slippers for next winter?

@kootnygirl, Writing a novel and at least attempting to publish it, is so going on my list.

Um, I blog in secret too. Kids names are uh not what it says. I never mention blogging or twitter in front of my kids. I show no pictures. I did go last year and I will go this year, but I use my blog name. ;)

there is this plastic wrap stuff you can put on your windows. honestly, it’s not the most attractive thing ever, but it does help. we cannot afford new windows either, but had a draft coming in through every single window and door! you buy this plastic stuff at home depot/lowes (or the grocery store, but it is more expensive there), and tape it around the window frame, then use a blow dryer to shrink the plastic wrap to the window frame. if you have curtains, you can’t tell it’s plastic wrapped for the most part!

    Issa Reply:

@Erin, I’m going to have to look into this one. Seems the easiest. Thank you.

    1. Electric blanket? I can’t live without mine. Well, I mean, I could, but I’d be cold.

My list includes traveling to Egypt. I want to cruise down the Nile, stop and explore the tombs and pyramids. Shop in suks(markets). That’s tops for me.

@avasmommy, Um Jenna? How drugged would I have to make you, so we could go to Egypt one day?

Relief from the cold, lack of decent insulation and flimsy windows from one who knows all to well…

Use attic insulation on the windows – it reduces or raises the temperature by at least 10 degrees.

I originally read about it here:

    http://chilechews.blogspot.com/2008/06/desert-cooling_26.html

I’ve done it on a couple of my windows and you can’t tell from inside or outside – I kind of created a sandwich with attic insulation as the “filling” and window coverings (cheap ones, even paper shades (can you say $5 each plus they are made of recycled paper and can be recycled?!) on either side as the “bread”.

The paper shades are called RediShades (http://redishade.com) and can be purchased (along with the attic insulation) at Ace, Lowes, Home Depot, etc…

    It totally works!!

Oh, and wear socks to bed – really thick only lady, fuzzy, hot pink, you wouldn’t be caught dead in socks and that will keep you warm too!

I’m sad. I just need to pout for a moment.

Okay. I’ll miss you SO much. It won’t be the same without you. I’d love to see you sometime this year. My house is freezing too. I just hunker down and bitch until June.

@anymommy, You bitch about the weather? Really? I never knew that. ;)

  • Kirsten says:

I hear you on the insulation! Our house before the remodel felt more like a tent than a house. I can’t imagine what it must be like in 40 degree weather. Can you just walk around in a Snuggie??
.-= Kirsten´s last blog ..Joy to Renee! =-.

    Issa Reply:

@Kirsten, It’s COLD. Truly. I think I have six blankets on my bed and one is a down comforter. When the kids are with me, the little two always end up in my bed as well.

  • Mynde says:

I try and keep my lists like this real (things I might actually be able to swing- ya know)- go sledding with the kids until your cheeks hurt (both butt and face :) , go ice skating outside while it is snowing, swim in the ocean, stargaze with your little ones and ride a bicycle built for two. I like the list idea- I just might make one myself! Mine will include a night of complete drunkeness!

    Issa Reply:

@Mynde, That’s funny, I always think the exact opposite. The big things. Ha.

  • Cherry says:

Oh the windows and insulation dilemma! We actually buckled down and put in insulation, new windows, tuned up the heater AND put in a ginormous new AC unit (you heard of those? ;-) ) And now what do I have to show for it? We’re selling this place for a loss and moving to a rental with old drafy windows, no AC, and no idea of the insulation situation and the rental will cost me more per month. Woo!

Someday I’ll get to Blogher. I’m kicking myself for not going all those times it was right here, but it seemed so expensive for just the conference ticket and I didn’t even have to pay for lodging. I’ll go when it comes back here… maybe.

As for the Before 40 list….
I want to use my passport for more than Canada and Mexico.
.-= Cherry´s last blog ..Poor Pregnant Sick Me =-.

    Issa Reply:

@Cherry, I have this shiny new passport…and it has nothing in it. It seems lonely. I’ll need to work on that.

Hopefully next year it will be on the west coast.

  • mommymae says:

i keep going back and forth and back and forth about blogher & it’s all because of money. i really really really REALLY (can you say really?) want to go, but we’re going to buy a house & since the housing market is wackadoodle here in phoenix, all monies may go there.

@mommymae, Hopefully you can make it. But next year, it should be on the west coast. :)

  • Joy says:

Cold houses suck. End of story. My sympathies, Issa! Warm, fuzzy socks, at all times, seems to help me. And big sweaters.

A list of 30 things to do before you turn 40 sounds like a great idea. Something I would like to do, is get started on some university classes. Either for a Masters, or for a second undergrad degree. Also, I would like to start reading books that are a little less “fluffy” all the time. As in, maybe one or two of the “classics” a year, and work my way up the literary ladder.

And I second the comment about the plastic shrink-wrap stuff for windows. It works really really well! Even in Saskatchewan!! ;)

    Issa Reply:

@Joy, Ooohhh I like that. The classics. I’ve always said that one day, I want to go and read the books that I skimmed or um bought cliff notes for in college.

  • Jennie says:

Oh, poor insulation, we have it too. Our house got down to 48 at one point. I think the wind is worse than the cold with a poorly insulated house. And my first comment on your fun blog is officially ridiculously dull!

But, I feel ya, basically. I’ve been cold for months.

    Issa Reply:

@Jennie, No worries. :) Hi. Nice to meet new people.
